Analysis

Travel documents for refugees are issued when they need to depart from Costa Rica and do not possess a valid travel document. Travel documents should be requested from the Refugee Unit of the General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners which website provides that :

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Valid and undamaged Migratory Identification Document for Foreign Persons (DIMEX).
  2. Deposit of $39.44.

The applicant for a travel document must have a resolution from the Refugee Unit authorizing the issuance of the Travel Document, which will be notified to the email [email protected]

The fees for requesting a travel document must be paid at any branch of Banco de Costa Rica through a deposit or Electronic Transfer in the name of the person applying for the travel document.

Payment must be made 24 hours prior to the scheduled appointment.

To request a travel document, you must have a prior appointment, which can be accessed through the official website of the General Directorate of Migration and Immigration.

Asylum seekers are not authorized to travel outside Costa Rica, whether to their country of origin or to a third country, as this implies the non-existence of a genuine need for international protection by the Costa Rica state. Departure from the country will effectively entail the implicit abandonment of the process and the closure of their asylum file.
