The Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH), in partnership with UNHCR, provides education services to asylum-seekers, refugees, and host communities in Maratane settlement, yet the tracking of educational enrolment and completion outside of Nampula province remains challenging. In 2022, 1,643 asylum-seeker and refugee children and 1,242 from the host-community in Nampula province were enrolled in Maratane Primary School with a further 720 asylum-seekers and refugees and 475 nationals enrolled in secondary school. This represents 55.3 per cent of all refugees and asylum seekers aged 6 to 17 years. Yet, these are not the entire estimates. In fact, children of refugees and asylum seekers that are not included in the Instant Network Schools Programme in Nampula province or live elsewhere in Mozambique cannot be tracked as the Education Management Information System does not disaggregate data by legal and protection status. Yet, it is envisioned that from 2023 onwards, this data will be disaggregated and collected from all schools in Nampula province through a pilot project – with its envisioned expansion to other provinces in 2024.
