Analysis

The domestic laws and policies of Bangladesh do not have any laws or regulations that ensures the family unity is maintained during the admission of asylum-seekers. Bangladesh lacks a national asylum law or policy framework and is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention or its 1967 Protocol.

Bangladesh is currently hosting more than a million Rohingya refugees along with some non-Rohingya and urban refugees within its territory. After the latest mass influx in 2017, Rohingya refugees were verified through biometric registration and documentation processes jointly by the Government of Bangladesh and UNHCR. During admitting them as refugees UNHCR promoted family unity of the Rohingya refugees based using a diverse range of registration and identity management practices aiming at providing up to date and accurate records of family composition to enhance access to protection, assistance, and solutions.
